When the question of whether we should correct Black English vernacular deep down our classrooms arose last week in class, I immediately became anxious. As a future English teacher with virtually no experience in the classroom, this was non a concern that I had even begun to think about, nor was it something I had realized that I would encounter. Because I attended high school in a homogenous white middle class neighborhood this was non something that I had experienced; a teacher correcting Ebonics. I am not naïve enough to think that the language does not know or that it is wrong, but this was the first time I considered it inwardly this context. By the end of the night our class was divided on the subject matter, which left me with more questions than answers.
After reading and discussing Derridas Monolingualsim of the Other or the Prosthesis of Origin, I have been suitable to analyze the question raised in class on deeper levels, taking into consideration Derridas thesis; I nevertheless have one language, yet it is not mine (2). This untaught thrives on the values of community and culture, but we have been construct on the values of consistency and uniformity.



This has caused a clash of subjects passim past and present society that reflects Derridas process of othering; the grasp or colonizer travel tos his language and culture on the others as described on page 39, as well as creating an idea of emancipation from the language and freedom within the colonized. But, because gibe to Derrida language cannot be appropriated, the idea of freedom of language does not really embody except for in the minds of those who are colonized. In our society this struggle is seen within the debate about the idea of a single uniform language (English, etc.) and uniform heathenish specimens. Within the urban classroom where a multitude of languages and cultures exist there is only one true uniform ideal; a complete education.
