Meaning and symbolism can be found in any film. In the film Rear Window the production planer utilizes role costumes and set design to convey certain messages and feelings to the viewers. The black clothing in the beginning gives me the impression of someone besotted and almost stubborn. She is someone who always gets what she wants. Once she has lighter clothing it appears to make her character open up and become more approachable.
Arguably the set could be considered a film in the film and something that has the most impact is the set. Jeffries is a stubborn character and wants things to go the way he wants them to. Being in a wheel chair hinders his movement and then the steps in his apartment prevent him from going anywhere which plays a ingredient at the end of the film. Every shot in the film, except for a few towards the end, comes from Jeffries apartment and his point of view when looking for across the courtyard.
