First Paper
Socrates trial, which took place in 399 B.C., was focused on three accusations: that he studied things on a lower floor the earth and in the sky, made the weaker argument the stronger, and taught others to follow his example. To every unitary around him, it seemed that Socrates searched beyond accepted religious views and tried to teach it to the spring chicken who should be learning what is already known. All of these issues deal with the slip of religion and whether Socrates is impious, or as Meletus, Socrates prosecutor, claimed, [Socrates is] a maker of gods, and on the ground that [he] create[s] new gods while not accept in the old gods (Euthyphro, 3b). However, this statement seems like a contradiction because he was saying that Socrates was not impious but rather he was irreligious, which was not why he was on trial. Still, Socrates was seen as a threat to the city for corrupting the youth with his radical views. Although numerous heap may have viewed Socrates as disrespectful toward religion, he was only questioning it as opposed to not believing in it entirely, making him irreligious in their time, not impious.
passim Socrates apology speech, he referred to god in the singular, instead of in the plural, which everyone else did. Socrates believed in one god but found flaws in others beliefs in multiple gods and proceeded to question them. This suggests that Socrates is monotheistic, believing in one god, which went against polytheistic religion in which there are more than one god, each with their own personalities and judgments. Another piece of state that suggests Socrates is monotheistic can be found when he questioned people in the community. Socrates asks people the question, what is pious and impious, many times in search of a well-defined answer, yet could never maintain one clear enough for his satisf consummation.
