Following from the winner of Marvin Gayes socio-political album Whats red On in 1971. Gaye teamed up with writer and producer Ed Townsend, who was from outside his regular Motown team, to create somewhat songs for his next album Lets Get It On.
Gaye was struggling with depression over his long-run troubled marriage and needed modern ideas on where to hire his music. He at that placefore called upon Townsend who had previously written for Etta James and Nat major power Cole, for some fresh ideas. One of the songs the pair created for the album was Lets Get It On.
Townsend recruited arranger Rene Hall, who he had previously worked with and the pair selected some of L.As finest jazz and RnB players for Lets Get It On. Gaye, who had been struggling for a while on where to take his music, was in need of new ideas and a fresh sound. This is reflected by most of the players who had contri barelyed to the previous success of Motown in Detroit, k instantaneouslyn as the Funk Brothers not be selected for the song. The only member of the Funk Brothers that remained was guitar player Melvin Wah Wah Ragin.
A chemical element that also probably contributed to Gayes newer sound was the fact the Motown Label had now relocated to Los Angeles, into the new Hitsville-West Studio, where Lets Get It On was recorded.

For e.g. there are 5 guitarists listed as playing on Lets Get It On, but it is very unlikely 5 guitarist were on the song. It is clear from other Motown tracks that this was also the case and that it is very likely that parts of songs were later replaced after recording, by apply different musicians to certain record parts.
