If it was the height of summer, the heat alone would have produced a claustrophobic atmosphere which would have heightened the experience of the audience. The content of this mosaic is therefore a visual one which is in someway trying to recreate a calamitous event which was as brutal in its violence, as was war in which these games may have tried to recreate. It is important to look at where the spectacle is viewed from and who is involved. This visual source is also exhausting to interpret without the aid of script, and therefore as a source of classical antiquity has to be viewed with some scepticism in its neutrality.
