Leaders fuming over rap music smokes

Madigan announced Thursday a lawsuit against brownish & Williamson Tobacco Corp. for targeting Illinois children with 101,000 hip-hop theme packs of cigarettes in gas move and convenience, grocery and liquor stores since April, in violation of a 1998 comprehensive settlement agreement.
Madigan said she will seek an immediate relegate on B&W hip-hop products as disrupt of its Kool Mixx 2004 advertising and promotional campaign; a court instal requiring B&W to counter the effects of its ad campaign, including requiring the company to run ads warning about the dangers of tobacco use in publications read by young people; and $11.7 million in penalties and costs to Illinois.
Many people think children begin a lifetime of addiction when they pick up their first cigarette, Madigan said. In fact, it may be when they pick up their first Kool Mixx compact disc read-only memory or log on to the House of Menthol.

When silklike advertising tells kids that buying these deadly products makes them cool, thats what theyll buy.
Madigans actions brought applause from Reginald Saffo, a Maywood parson who has become an activist against tobacco and liquor marketing aimed at youth.
Youre fighting against these people who are operating out of a profit motive, Saffo said. Theyre going to be mordant in acquiring it into the hands of these kids.
We have to be just as relentless to make it difficult for the children to get these items.
