In our human nature, naive ignorance of the worlds imperfections eventually yields to the recognition that the world does, in fact, contain hatred and violence.  In John Knowles novel, A break off Peace he places the main character, Gene Forrester in situations which consider this emotional transformation.  Gene twists increasingly aware of the nature of the world, through the beliefs and ideas he develops within his self conscious war.  In addition, symbols, place setting and characters clearly pageantry a fall from innocence, specifically that of our protagonist, Gene.

Symbols steer the theme of loss of innocence very clearly.  For example, Finnys pink fit out represents his individuality and aura of Finny-ness, and Genes wearing that shirt shows his desire to become like Finny.  Also, Lepers two identities, before and after enlisting display Genes final perception of the reality of the war, and what it is to him.  As the adult Gene recounts his novel, the changed ideas of war stand out in his memory as a foil of one another, presentation the intense contrast between Genes previous misconception of the wars glory and his newfound realization of its true nature.



  Finally, and most strongly the tree off which Finny and Gene jump represents innocence; jumping from the tree is against the rules and in doing so the boys accept the loss of structure. Metaphorically it could be seen as Adam and Eve, by eating of the forbidden fruit.  Symbols certainly subscribe to the theme of loss of innocence in A Separate Peace. 

Setting proves also as a strong example to the theme of fall from innocence.
