The Author:
1.Herman Melville is a very erudite author. Erudite intend characterized by great knowledge, which is clearly portrayed in the novel. He uses many complex convictions and a substantial amount of majestic terminology. For example, on page 48, Melville says, And in case of an injury besides suspected, its secretiveness voluntarily cuts it off from enlightenment or disillusion; and, not unreluctantly, action is taken upon surmise as upon certainty.
2.On the other hand, Melville also proves himself to be a pessimistic author. The al-Quran pessimistic means the belief that this is the worst of all attainable worlds and that all things ultimately tend toward evil. This is indeed true in Billy Budd, as we know that the main character, Billy, is executed after one false move. …Billy ascended; and, ascending, took the full rose of the dawn. In the pinioned figure arrived at the yard-end, to the wonder of all no motion was apparent, none save that created by the slow schedule of the hull in moderate weather, so majestic in a great ship ponderously cannoned.
The Style:
1.virtuoso style of Billy Budd is allusive. Melville creates many allusions in the book, such as biblical, mythological, and historical.
One allusion is the moment before Billy is executed: At the same moment it chanced that the vapory fleece hanging low in the East was shot through with a soft repute as of the fleece of the Lamb of God seen in the transcendental vision…
2.The style of the sentences in Billy Budd is very extensive. Melvilles use of lengthy sentences perhaps draws the readers precaution away from the novel.
